Every hindu family, that too the Brahmin community, has atleast one festival every month throughout the year, whether it is Chandramana or Souramana or English Calendar. The hindu calendar starts from Padya i.e., Ugadi Padya on which day the festival of Ugadi (commencement of new year) is celebrated. Similarly Bhaanu bidige, Aksha Tadige, Vinayaka Chouti, Naga Panchami, Subrayana Shrasti, Ratha Sapthami, Gokulastami, Vijaya Dashami, Modalekadashi, Utwana Dwadashi, Shani Trayodashi, Anantha Padmanabha Chaturdasi, Vyasa Pournima, Bheemana Amavasye are the major 15 festivals and there are several other smaller festivals like Deepavali, Gowri Festival etc., In addition, there are rituals to be performed on every child from its birth to death like Tottiligiduvudu the process of putting the baby into the cradle for the first time, giving vigour and vitality herb like Bhaje to the new born, bathing the baby with special oil etc., Namakarana the naming ceremony, Karna Bheda the ear piercing ceremony, putting anklets, bracelets, trunklets etc., There are also sixteen major rituals to be performed on male offsping like Namakarana, Upanayana, Vivaha etc., Each of these rituals are further supported by various activities like applying vermilion on to the forehead, bathing, arathi by married (not widowed) women etc., All these activities are described in the form of ritual songs called SAMPRADAYA GEETHEGALU, attributing the child as an incornation of god. Several episodes from the hindu epics like Ramayana, Mahabharatha, Bhagavatha etc., are also described in detail in these Sampradaya Geethegalu. It is very interesting to go through these songs so that the rich heritage and culture of hindu family is understood in all its perspective. Recently Sri A.V. Venkataramaiah, an enthusiast in such activities, has collected more than 200 such songs, visiting various families where senior members aged above 65-70 years are still alive and collected the songs in their original form and published in a book form bearing the name SAMSKRITI SOURABHA. The first edition of the book was soldout in a span of three months and now the second edition is out. Well known Kannada singers like Shimoga Subbanna, Sri Subramanya Swamiji and veteran Kannada theatre personality Master Hiriyannayya have expressed their pleasure on the efforts of Sri A.V. Venkataramaiah and blessed him with much more such success. Sri A.V. Venkataramaiah can be contacted at No. 201, GAYATRI, 1st A Cross, 4th Block, Banashankari 3rd Stage, 2nd Phase, Bangalore 560 085.
