We must congratulate these great scholars on the valuable work they have brought out and as far as we are aware, this is a work of original research, which marks a new era in the literary history of modern Kannada The publication of the Lives of Kannada Poets is so refreshing that we are sure that genuin e lovers of the Kannada language and literature will receive it with great exultation The present volume deals with about 200 Kannada peots and poetesses who flourished till about the 14th century As the authors have explained in their prefac e. the task of collecting facts about the lives of even famous poets is very great as the poets themselves have carefully eluded leaving any trace of their life except their works. The book is written in the form of the histories of English literature in a chronological order with the age and account of the poets and poetesses as far as ascertained, together with the list of their works and specimens of their thought and style. There is no doubt that a labour so vast as this extending over a period of 10 or 15 years has been one of pure love of litera ture and there could be no suitable recompense for his work except in the grat
