The Commander-in-chief learns about this and begins to treat the lady as the queen of his master. The King observes the maiden and her pining condition in a great national festival, when all the ladies of the City were eagerly looking at the procession. He saw theauty and contentment in every face and this single exception naturally struck him. He makes further cnquiries, pursues the matter and finds the truth ; but he statly refuses to accept the lady as his wife, although the Commander-in-Chief, the nominal husband, freely offers her to the King. The lady, after knowing all this, immediately goes to the pleasure park where the king was rambling alone and entreats him in manifold ways to accept her as his wife, but, after all, commits suicide at not being able to marry the king.
