Dear Mr. Srinivasa Iyengar,

Pray accept my sincere thanks for the gift to me of a copy of your learned " Sanskrita Kavicharite " in Kanarese which I read with great profit and interest. I find that while in their respective histories of Sans- krit literature Western scholars have confined their attention to the chronology of the poets coupled with a brief description of comparative merit of their literary works, you have taken great pains to collect in your work the traditional annecdotes about the lives of the poets, which, but for your timely attempt would have entirely disappeared. Your disagreement with Western Scholars in your account of the chronology of the poets necessitates a revision of Indian chronology as a whole. The sweet and elegant verses you have quoted from the poets in illustration of various points discussed afford a delightful and charming reading. Your treatment of the subject is admirably excellent. And I have no hesitation in saying that you have laid the Kannada reading public under a deep debt of gratitude to you. I wish you success in your laudable attempt at bringing the work to completion.

With renewed thanks
